Second-Hand Breath

We sit and talk
you in your prozac calm
and me in my vicodin haze
We debate buying
a used respirator
and wonder about the effects
of breathing
second-hand oxygen

We stare at the shriveled figure
lying in a worn-out bed
that so many have
been in before
inhaling bits of
sterilized hospital air
and staring at us
through closed eyes

Do you think we
should take him home
and hook him up
to the respirator
we will buy?
a family reunion
of used dreams
fading away
with each second-hand breath

Terry Angelo:  I was born and raised in Manhattan -a fact of which I am very proud, and which I think greatly affects my writing. I have travelled extensivley across the USA and Mexico, usually on a Greyhound bus and with a backpack on my shoulders. Human rights violations are a major writing theme for me, and I am having a piece published in the August, 2006 issue of Cynic Magazine. email:  Terry Angelo
