Allan Duffy
started his working life as a coal miner in
Newcastle on the east coast of Australia. The harshness of these times
is reflected in many of his poems. At an early age he realised a pen or
paint brush was lighter than a shovel full of coal and became an artist
and feature writer. He worked in the early days of live television as a
scenery artist in Melbourne. His illustrated feature articles and comic
strips appeared in Melbourne newspapers and national magazines and he
hosted 35 successful one man exhibitions of his paintings around
Australia and two in California. After numerous trips to Broken Hill,
Allan retired to the city in 1995, where his artistic output continues
unabated. His first anthology of poems, illustrated by his insightful
cartoon illustrations is currently at the printers and should be
released later in 2006. Duffy has illustrated several books, is a
member of the Poets in the Pub, a performing poet with The Silver
Tongued Ferals of Broken Hill, winner of the inaugural Yarn
Spinner’s
Cup and is a Life Governor of The Royal Women's Hospital Melbourne.
